Healthcare is a fast-growing field in Alabama, and the growing elderly population is resulting in high demand for geriatric care managers. A job as a care manager offers flexibility and work-life balance difficult to find in other careers. If you have a background in nursing, social work, gerontology, psychology, occupational or physical therapy or another health or human services field, working as a care manager can offer a refreshing change of pace.

Care managers often describe their work as emotionally rewarding, particularly since they can make such a positive impact on an individual’s quality of life. Care managers help clients (and their families) cope with the challenges of aging, and navigate the often-confusing maze of options for home care, housing, and other services.

Face-to-face visits in the client’s home, wherever home may be, give the care manager the opportunity to spend time with the client, and get to know his/her needs and preferences. Some of the job responsibilities of care managers include the following:

  • Assessing a client’s physical, medical and mental health status, functioning, social circumstances, and environment, and developing a comprehensive plan of care.
  • Helping clients implement specific recommendations for care and making referrals to various professionals, services, and programs. Care managers are well-versed in federal, state, and local benefits and entitlement programs, and other resources available to older adults and people with disabilities.
  • Serving as an advocate for the client and providing support, education, and direction to the individual and his/her family members, and coordinating services with other healthcare professionals involved in the client’s plan of care.
  • Providing monitoring and oversight when needed, such as overseeing home care services.

A real plus for care managers is flexibility and control over one’s schedule. Whether you are new to the working world, seek to expand your horizons, or are near retirement and want to work fewer hours, a job as a care manager might be an excellent fit.
